alright so stop trying to be someone you're not. you can't be anything but what you are, figuratively and literally. and stop thinking everyone wants to be like you. you're not as glam as you think. and hey, if everyone seems like you, maybs you're like them. don't be so critical. i keep my mouth shut and listen and seriously you need a reality slap. you think you're so worldly, but you're not. then you try to downplay how you think others percieve you by being humble and claiming you know nothing really. then you secretly bask in what you think you know. well guess what, socrates beat you to it! yeah, that's right. so stop acting like a lamer.

i was sitting on my bed and my head was leaning against a pillow. i could see the empty space between my bed and desk and the wall. i had hung a windchime on my lamp and i noticed that the weight of the part that moves to make it chime had a suspended marble in it. then i wondered what would happen to that marble ten years from now or twenty. then i thought about all of my things- pictureframes, books, pens, pencils, paper i wrote on, pictures that are only important to me and the people in them. what's going to happen to them? what's going to happen to me? i don't believe that people are made up of the objects that they own, but i do believe that people are sort of in the objects themselves. or memories. and the reason it's important to me and not you is because i have a specific memory associated with it. so they sort of are alive. i make them alive. and when i forget, they are gone. and when im not there to remember, they become...worthless?

oh hey. so i learned something a few days ago in philosophy that i don't think i'll ever forget. my professor turned to a girl and said "you were two once, right?" and she was like "yeah?" and he was like "but you as a two year old no longer exist because you are you right now, right?" "yeah...?" "okay, so someday you will be twenty, and if that is true than the you of now is in the same position as the you when you were two. you don't exist." "meaning?" "meaning you don't exist." "but i exist now, in the present." "no you don't. the present barely exisits. by the time you get the sentence 'i live in the present' out, it will be the past. now and now and now and now and gone and gone and gone and gone."
so i hope you're all having a good time at school. now and now and now and now and gone and gone and gone and gone.

ankan, enjoy this book always, mr.bogsy "2001"
that is what it says in sharpie in the font cover of my book. maybe ankan did not like the book as much as mr.bogsy trusted he would. maybe he is just too cool for reading. this exchange causes me to picture a happy old school teacher handing the book to a boy the day he leaves forever. then, later, a boy sitting in a pile of junk on the floor of his room sorting. and coming across this book, and forgetting any memories it may have forced him to recall. its journey led it to annies book stop, and then to me. who knows where it was before. i have never met ankan or mr.bogsy and probably never will. but somehow i feel like i know them, and at the same time, completely mystified as to who they are. i dunno. you see these effects that reading for 4 hours straight causes!!!

yesterday we were in my friends boat. as we were happily cruising along, the boat-owning friend casually asked one of her first mates to knock the tubing tubes into the water. she went over and promptly screamed. "what's wrong?!?!?" we cried. "there is a huge spider in the tube!" she replied. knowing very well that this friend had a horrific fear of spiders, we all shrugged and rolled our eyes, thinking that it was probably a rather large daddy-long-legs. another friend, who was nearer the tube than the rest of us peered into it and exclaimed "wow, thats one big spider!" trusting that he would not have remarked if the spider was small, the rest of us carefully moved from our perch at the front of the boat to peek into the tube. there, sitting in the tube, was the largest spider i have ever encountered. and i do not lie. it was one, big ass spider. if you are curious, you go and google image "wolf spider". thats what i think it was. another said it was a recluse, but i did not think that they lived around here. anyway, all girls in the boat screamed and ran to the tip, so that the entire front of the boat was actually dipping into the water. i'm still shivering.

i happened to notice a label in my shorts that said something to the effect of "the perfection of this item can only be surpassed by she who wears it" and i remembered that i once found that cute. then i actually thought about it, and it made me realize how much it disgusted me. i think trying to achieve perfection in appearance is just silly. to live without faults is a fault in itself. the faults make us beautiful and unique. no one needs to be perfect to be beautiful. no one is perfect. no me, not you, not the shorts.
oh, and did anyone see the big pink moon tonight? beautiful.

today i thought a lot about time, and the past. there are memories that i wish i could forget in order to make space for better things. however, the more i thought about it, the more i realized a great many things. we obviously can't change the past, and we obviously shouldn't dewll in it. that's when we forget to live, right? learning to learn from the past was one of the hardest obstacles i've ever faced. it's hard to not think about the past, because it's all i know. it's easy to get caught up in memories. but the truth is that they are gone and never coming back. sometimes it's good, and sometimes it's bad. what do you think? then i wondered if, on a clock, time was the lines or the spaces. certainly the lines represent a marker in the measurement, but somehow what happens in between the lines seems more important. of course you could be technical and say that they are all time, but the lines last so briefly, like their job is to string together the spaces. i dunno, i just remember being amazed by that when i was little. then again, i was the kid who got the question about how to read a digital clock wrong on one of my first math tests. they always seemed too easy to read.
oh, and i found out that flag day is the 14th, not the 4th

so today, lacking anything particularly important to do, i picked up an old copy of the old farmers almanac and opened up to a random page. i began to read an article about conveniences of the past, mainly building up to the development of the tv dinner. and as i read, i thought more and more about how sad aspects of life can be. the fact that tv dinners were referred to as marvelous alarmed me. they were meant to make the dinner process faster and easier, and this got me thinking about how thats precisely what inventors focus on. finding easier ways to do things. but if everything was as fast as nuking a tv dinner, we would miss out on life itself. if we really never had to do anything, then we wouldn't ever do much at all. people in the future would have no clue how to do things that we ('back in the day' to them)would consider easy. we have no grasp on how much work it was to cook a meal in colonial times. count the number of fast food places in the center. now count the number of sit down restaurants. i could understand springing for it once in awhile, but people actually live off of this stuff? why do we rush around so much, striving to make everything faster and more efficient? we are just racing through life, missing all of the chances to relax, and enjoy. people work and work to get things done so they will have time to do what they want, but then a new opportunity to do something faster arises and they take that, completely forgetting about taking the time.
in other news, my comic was published in the paper. oh, and can anyone help me think of a name for them?

okay so i have consumed 4 different kinds and servings of french fries in 3 days. way to be healthy! i guess it's time to haul out the richard simmons... i wrote a letter today. i wish people wrote letters more often. its so romantic or something. at lunch, we were discussing presidents and we came to the conclusion: washington couldn't tell a lie nixon couldn't tell the truth clinton couldn't tell the difference (where we promptly added: "you're not my wife!")

so today i sat on the swing-rocker outside and waited for the sun to set and the stars to rise. there was a little star in the sky and i decided to wait with it until the other stars came out, so it wouldn't be alone. i sort of drifted off and when i woke up, it was dark and there were only two stars in my sight. it was cold, so i got up and headed inside. but the second i stepped out from under the awning, i noticed that the sky was brilliant with stars. hundreds and hundreds. all twinkling.

since i have felt like i have been focused on the future so much lately, i decided to drive around town and remember. so for an hour, i just drove to all of the places i could remember that were, at one point in my life, very important to me. it's sad, how some people just disappear from your life. although new ones come in, it's hard to forget those that are gone. does this ever happen to anyone else, or is it just me?
